Hometown:(Family Home) Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Currently travels a lot for job, (apartment) home in New York City where employer is out of.
Starting Town:New York, USA
Brief History:Matthew's parents moved to the United States from Canada two years prior to him being born in order to be more connected to his father's family. Choosing to stay close to the border for convince of keeping contact yet with his Mother's side, they settled in upper Michigan. Now older, he doesn't quite get why they moved into the United States in the first place as they gripe a lot about it, but he's content for now and joins in the regular visits back to Canada when permitted.
He grew up in a small town school, unsure of what he was doing all the way up to graduation. He found entrance in Bay State College in Massachusetts and willingly moved out there despite the distance, parents footing the bill as long as he was happy. In the end, his mother chose Entertainment Management for him in attempts to 'bring out boss potential'. Leaving with his Bachelor in the field, his lack of ambition led him into his current job, using his management skills to host secretary and assistant in an Entertainment studio, dealing across many boards and mediums. It required him to transfer a state over and he did so without much fuss.
Moving backwards, through out middle school and into college, he found loose friendship with most people, falling into the crowd without much to stand out with. Later on, he mostly took Art classes for electives, and even though he wasn't all that good, met most of his closer and to date friends in that department. A small hockey team lead for him to be automatically accepted, and he's played since he could remember until Junior year in Highschool. Occasionally he still goes back for it to get away from life, but always lacking the bulk, he only has the foot skills and often only shoots around alone.
His favorite classes in school were Maths, and even though a calculator was his best friend while working, enjoyed them immensely and finds calm in sitting down and balancing budgets and other assorted things that help him out. Because of this, even though he's living on his own in an apartment, he's very good at keeping his money in check as they bounce from place to place on trips.
Personality:There isn't much to Matthew that allows him to stand out, the biggest offender being being his lack of confidence and disinterest in speaking up that's settled over him since childhood. He keeps a lot of things to himself, which works both ways. Matthew is a good friend to have if you approach him first, as it's rare to go the other way around. He listens without objections and is rather closed lipped - nothing much will ever leave him. He's sort of like your Grandmother's jewelry box - everything inside goes to the grave, weather it was hers or yours inside.
The large downside to it is he's often left in his own little world, unsure of how to break free. Out of school, he's slowly getting used to it as he's introduced to associates and arranging meetings, but he can get quickly over whelmed. It's also hard to tell what's on his mind without prying and beating it out of him, even if he's good for others to cry on his shoulder and get a hug. His frustrations go home with him and often times, he discusses it with the walls in his kitchen. He second guesses himself a lot, making him a double-triple checker and actually sort of efficient at whatever he does.
When he gets over whelmed or largely frustrated with something and can't escape other people, he tends to say things out of the blue that he really doesn't mean, and occasionally, exactly what is on his mind. Usually it's something impolite to say and he instantly regrets it, but thankfully it's rare, and when he does feel more comfortable to let things lip for often, it's around his friends.
Matthew is a sucker for sap and fluff, and eats up pity like a large push over. It's really not the case - when he doesn't want to do something, he'll purposely act like he's not there and will avoid the issue, but, puppy dog eyes go straight to his heart and it's another reason why to keep him around. If you can cry in front of him, you'll pretty much get a hug, a cheer up speech and a free dinner out of him regardless of who you are. It's for the best his apartment doesn't allow animals, especially the stray kind.
Appearance:Matthew is taller than most of his female companions, ending at around 5' 8". His shoulders are lean if not looking slightly mistreated as his regular weight lifting and exercise from Highschool that he's since dropped, but most of the thin muscle has kept, giving him soft defining in places like his arms. You really can't tell from afar as his baby face keeps him from matching hockey in any way, but it helps him feel better about himself. His hair is a shallow blond, brightest in the summer although it mellows out considerably in the fall through winter. Chin length, it used to be super curly when he was a child, making him look like the poster male Goldie locks. Now that he's older, he's afraid cutting it would lessen the weight and make it curl completely up again, so he only trims it occasionally. Often times he pulls it back and out of his face, most often when he is at work or cooking, and it rather helps to keep his 'young' appearance.
Matthew finds little appeal in tattoos and only finds piercings attractive on girls, so naturally he doesn't have either. Like any other boy he has a few faded scars here and there, mostly on his legs from hockey, and his shoulders are very softly freckled. Other than that, he's very plain and prefers that way on others as well. He does think his dark blue eyes are pretty - but he's slowly losing them to hazel as he grows up and that rather saddens him.
Fashion Style:What Matthew wishes to wear and what he actually owns fall into two separate categories. Most of his traveling comes hand in hand with his job, and in his eagerness to keep his recently acquired position, the Canadian jumps through the fashion hoop to look presentable and professional during work hours and the time in between when around employers or associates. During these hours, Matthew is a man of collared shirts and ill fitting polos - usually in reds and creams that border on gold, his two favorite colors that may or not have started young with a liking for Harry Potter. He has a charcoal vest that comes out time to time, but he leaves it in the closet when he has a chance, wearing it for more formal events. Ties aren't his thing, and he doesn't wear them, despite the few on the hanger in his closet.
Though, in the time that Matthew is off and with people of his own age, he dresses to make him self comfortable. His confidence keeps him from being a full blown peacock in the crowd, but he does own things such as charcoal skinny jeans and a studded belt to try and fit in and be trendy. His casual wardrobe has a large bias for plaids - including two zip up hoodies in that pattern and a pair of red shoes with plaid on the fabric he got as a gift two Christmas ago from college mates who caught onto his preferences. He often chooses plain shirts, and always opting comfort over style, sometimes just leaves in an oversize sweatshirt and jeans.
He always wears his glasses, and has two pairs - one with black frames and one with red. It's mostly because he's afraid of losing them somewhere and not having a backup as he truly really needs them, but he picks which pair based on what he's wearing usually.
Goals:○ Do Something His Way: his whole point for going to school was to learn how to be his own boss and how to run a business, and he'd like nothing more than that as it's an easy way for him to say more and stop being so bottled up.
○ Go To Europe: When his boss goes over seas, it's without him due to his greenhorn status, so he only ever sees much the USA. He'd love to go to Europe somewhere, like France or Italy.
Secret:Matthew used to be a huge Harry Potter yet back in the day, and his childhood room reflects it perfectly to this day. Though red and gold reflect as his favorite colors, he always thought he was a Hufflepuff. He's pretty mute about it though these days due to a bit of embarrassment for his old geek self, but he has the whole series on his book shelf still in his home.
He's also terribly afraid of dying alone and not having anyone to grow old with - already away from his family he feels secluded and would love nothing more than a really close friend or partner.
Other:Matthew loves zoos, and tries to stop at them whenever he can when traveling. The polar bears are his favorite, and he has a pass at the local one by his apartment and heads there whenever he really needs to unwind.
RP Sample:From 'Life As We Knew It':
He rolled his eyes, trying to avoid chastising the fact America left dirty clothes out in the first place for him to wear. Matthew didn't really want to get up so he wiggled around the in seat, exchanging clothes with flexible menuvours, mimicking something of an ADHD beaver. With a good shot he tossed the set in the direction indicated, not fond of the idea of being up and about still. The Canadian caught the soda as it was pitched towards him, clutching it tight for a moment so the bubbles could even out before opening.
"... I'm moving closer to the border. The lakes were pretty high already when I crossed, but thats from the rain only... they're diverting it pretty good," he explained, tracing the rim of the can as Kumajirou continued to press himself across America's couch. He wasn't sure if it was going to get better. Generally, weather was always out of their hands. According to his scientists, this was something years in the making. It wouldn't be fixed over night.
England. Most likely completely under water, the island nation with enough twisted borders to have no clear spot. He couldn't tell America that though and let himself deflate, grimacing. "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't taking a toll on me too, America... my house was getting too busy, I couldn't handle it anymore with all those people demanding my attention when they never want it elsewise... Just turn it on, maybe we'll see how everyone else is," he flicked the tab up on his soda and listened to it fizz out as he spoke.
Matthew licked his dry lips and took a sip, violet eyes down cast. "No one. I tried to call France but his phones were busy, Hong Kong's secretary told me he was busy trying to aid the other nations and Germany wouldn't put me through to Prussia because he had other things to attend to." God, he needed a hug so badly. He let out a startled sound as his pet launched from the arm rest and into his lap, coming to sit there. The Canadian ignored his constant 'Who?' sound.OOC
