Character Name: Nguyễn Ánh Quỳnh
Nationality: Vietnamese
Gender: Female
Birthday: 02/09
Age: 29
Education: Quỳnh went off to study abroad when she was still a teenager; after finishing and getting a BDes, she found that it wasn’t such a great industry to get into. She has gone and relearned the ropes, but only to be good enough to own nail salons.
Occupation: Owner of Beautiful Nail.
Family:
Nguyễn Thị sông Huong → Mother
Nguyễn Minh Liêm → Father
Hometown: Saigon, Vietnam
Starting Town: London
Brief History:
Quỳnh was born into a poor farmer’s family in the outskirts of Sài Gòn. It was a fairly large family, but it was a broken family. Her older sister was always trying to leave with a man that she recently met, and her older brother was always coming up with schemes to try and start a business. She’s guilty of trying to start businesses as well, but she will always keep her head in the game. She would be worried about the family, and so she had to drop out of school at a young age; but she did pick up on how to speak French and is able to keep a simple conversation going if spoken to.
When she was old enough, she moved to the city and wanted to make it big so she could somehow repay her parents and help them out in any way she can. When she got to the city though, she met a man. They talked and got close to one another, and she let it slip that she wanted to go to America for a new start and open new streets for income. He said that he could take her, and they soon started on the preparations for her to marry him so she could immigrate to the new continent. By staying with him, she has learned American customs and transitioning was a little bit easier for her; he also taught her how to understand bits and pieces of Cantonese (only enough to know if people are insulting her).
She had to give up most of her lifesavings to go over, but she managed to do it. When she was in America, she did whatever she could to try and get money. She babysat, worked at a Vietnamese diner, worked at an Asian grocery store, picking worms; she even went into some illegal work before settling in and working at a nail salon—all the while going to school. Now she makes a steady income, but she would send most of the money to her parents and keep only what she needs for herself.
Six years later, she managed to get a citizenship, and she has been a US citizen ever since. She has learned to speak English fairly decently, and so she is qualified to speak in both Vietnamese and English. She is still working as a nail artist though.
Personality:
Quỳnh is what almost every man wants in a woman; to be quiet and just agree with whatever he is saying. She is very calm and mild mannered when she is around people, and can be very easygoing when necessary. She is never one to shout, and she will do whatever she can to try and stop an argument peacefully.
Believe it or not, she is a very patient woman and she has a very high tolerance level for children and childish people. She knows that kids will be kids, and they will always be curious. When she’s annoyed though, she may speak in a very loud tone of voice but she will never explode at anyone in public. It wasn’t very ladylike, and she would never have people see her as being unladylike—at least that’s what she aims for; at times though, she will accidentally lose herself and explode. When she realises what she had done, she will go and apologise to whoever she exploded at and ask for forgiveness in any way she can.
Quỳnh is a very social and friendly person. She will always be grinning and smiling about one thing or another. Whenever she meets someone new, she will usually be the first to initiate conversation with them. She has a very neighbourly and open door policy when it comes to her personal items, but she will have the common courtesy to knock on someone’s door and ask their permission to use anything that is theirs. She knows that there are differences in cultures, and so she keeps that in mind. Heck, she’s so friendly that whenever she goes out with anyone she will offer to pay the bill at all times, and she will not let them pay for her—and if she cannot afford to pay to go out, then she will invite them over to her home and she will cook for them.
Keep in mind, that this is the Quỳnh that most people see. As nice as she may seem, if she is friends with enough people she will prove to be like most women; a gossip. Whenever someone wants to spread a rumour or spread news, then she was the person they should tell. If they tell her, then by the next morning the whole block would know about it. She cannot keep a secret at all.
She is also very abrupt and will be caught up in the moment when she starts businesses. She will always jump into something big without thinking and it will hurt her more than it will help her. Quỳnh usually does it out of greed because she is always trying to get more. It does damage her in the end. In addition to that, she will sometimes bend the rules slightly so that they would benefit her in the best way possible. She is smart enough to not get caught, but she does sometimes skate on thin ice. With that in mind, she will sometimes use people and will feel no remorse about it.
When it comes to fighting physical fighting, she would never initiate it but she will finish it. She doesn’t like to since she knows that a woman should never fight, but she will give the other party a quick one-two to the face if they lay a hand on her. If they just threaten her, then she will give them a lashing with her tongue if they manage to make her snap. When she enters a fight, she will fight very dirty and she will keep fighting until she won since that was what she learned when she was on the farm.
Appearance:
Quỳnh looks to be half a decade younger than she really is, but that is due to the fact that she is 150 centimetres high. The fact that her long brown hair tumbles straight down past her lower back may also give the illusion that she is much shorter than she really is; that is, when she doesn’t have it tied in a ponytail.
Working on the farm has given her a farmer’s tan, along with a very butch body. Even after she left the farm to head to America, she still has a slight tan from back when she was out all the time. Her hands are calloused and they have been worn, but she still ‘beauties them up’ and will paint her nails various colours and sometimes she will add designs on them.
She is not fat, but she isn’t skinny either. She doesn’t show her body often though, since she is always dressed modestly. At times, she could be wearing provocative clothes, but it is very rare and only on special occasions (or when she is forced into it). She doesn’t wear the clothes because she is self-conscious about weight, but more of the appearance of her body. Because she had worked on the farm back when she was at home, she injured herself very often by mistake when using tools, moving heavy materials, and even just slipping in the mud while working on the rice fields. Her arms, legs and even most of her sides have large, faded scars all over them. It is the reason for why she usually wears long pants and non-revealing clothes. The ‘short’ clothing that she willingly wears outside are T-Shirts and tank tops. When she’s at home, she would wear shorts though since she believes no one would be able to see her and criticise her.
She may have large brown eyes (well, by most Vietnamese standards), but she can’t see much from them; so when she’s out, she usually has to wear contacts because her vision isn’t the best. When she’s at home, she doesn’t bother with glasses or contacts (except when she’s reading). She will try to go out without her glasses and/or contacts often, mainly because she forgot to wear them, but she will always hit at least one thing on her way out to remind her to head back in and grab them.
At least she always has a smile on her face at all times. Quỳnh will only show a frown if she is deep in thought or when she is overly stressed—and even then the frown is very subtle. As her motto goes, “When you’re a girl, you should always be happy and smiling; it will bring luck and prosperity your way.”
Fashion Style:
Style doesn’t mean much to Quỳnh, but she will dress for the occasion. Whenever it is just everyday work clothing, then she would wear whatever is comfortable; jeans, T-shirts, shorts, anything that she can easily move in. Just because she is a (somewhat) respected woman, doesn’t mean she has to be stuffy and stiff like most others. She was a simple farm girl, and she will always be a simple farm girl—even if she has gone to the big city.
Goals:
There aren’t many things that Quỳnh is aiming to do, but one of her biggest dreams is to start her own chain of nail salons.
Secret:
In her youth, she may not have had the cleanest hands out of all of her friends; she may have taken a life or two, but it wasn’t human (but she still feels terrible about it).
Likes:
-People: She loves company; as she says, “The more the merrier, and things are always fun with friends.”
-Stories: She loves to exchange stories, from all over and from everyone. She loves telling them more though, and especially when it’s told to kids. They always have a much better energy than adults; that, and they are a lot more gullible.
-Football (soccer): She loves the game, even if she cannot play the game well. She will play with some people, but she prefers to watch it more than play the game.
-Karaoke: She loves to karaoke. Whenever anyone invites her to karaoke, she would agree to go and sing her heart out.
-Physical Activities: She needs to keep herself in shape somehow, and doing physical activities is one of them. May it be swimming, biking, running, or even working on the fields; she would gladly be outdoors and moving.
Dislikes:
-Wasting: She doesn’t like it when people waste things. She does her best to only use what she needs, and she will correct others when she sees them wasting.
-Video Games: She does not understand games, and it confuses her to no end. She always ends up rage quitting whenever she plays, and will always quit the game not long after rage quitting.
-Western Food: She cannot get used to it. She would much prefer Vietnamese food, and only if she makes it. She will constantly criticise people’s food behind their back.
-War: She doesn’t like fighting, as she finds it pointless. She will sometimes get into fighting, but she doesn’t agree with it at times.
-Killing: She was never one to kill anything, but she knows that it is a part of life and survival to kill living things for protection, food and shelter. She doesn’t take joy, or pride in it, but she will do it for the sake of survival. Though, just because she is willing to crush that bug, it does not mean that she won't feel guilty for killing it.
-Disrespect: She believes that everyone has to be respected on some level, even if they do not give respect; so she will not allow anyone to be disrespectful under her watch.
-Public Displays of Affection: She would prefer it if people shared their intimacy in the comfort of their own homes, and not where the world could see it.
Strengths:
-Planning Ahead: Because she would need to see how much money she would be able to send to her parents and survive, she would need to plan for the long run, so she would have to run mental scenarios to get things through.
-Independent: She does her best to try and keep herself afloat; she learned how to do things when she was younger, so it was time to apply what she learned to real life.
-Intelligent: She can turn things around and twist words so that it will come to her advantage.
-Jack of All Trades: She knows the basics of doing many things, but she has not mastered them yet, due to being ripped away too soon.
-Strong Stomach: She can eat almost anything. She is also willing to give any type of food a try, and will never give demands to have any other food.
-Drinking: She can drink as well as anyone, even if she may get tipsy. She usually avoids drinking, but she will if there is a large gathering and/or party going on.
Weaknesses:
-Religions: She's a slave to religion. Even when there is something large about to happen, she would drop it like a dead fly to go to the temple and pay her respects, or repent.
-Competition: She's all for competition, but once she is in one, she takes it fairly seriously. She would even try to hack a person off, just to win.
-Children on the streets: It reminds her of her past, and how she feels sorry for them. She tends to avoid them, but they're like her kryptonite. She just turns to jelly every time she sees a street rat.
-Her parents: She is always looking for way to please her parents, even when they shipped her out and let her to her own devices. She still loves them, and cares for them very much.
-No Concept of Bacteria/Food Poisoning: She’ll eat things past the expiry date like it was still 'good.' Thankfully she hasn’t been sick yet from eating the near-deadly food.
-Pride: She may not show it, but she is very prideful of her country and she will do her best to let people see the side of Việt Nam that is different than the war.
-Grudges: Even though she hardly gets angry, she will hold a grudge. She will also want revenge if the situation calls for it.
Quirks:
-Accent: Many people may not understand Quỳnh when they first talk to her, but she does try to make herself as understandable as possible. She cannot help herself, but when she gets excited more and more of her accent will come out—when she is neutral, her accent will lessen.
- Ăn Chay: The seventh month of every year (in the lunar calendar), she will not eat meat for a month and will make time to go to the temple every day in that month (as opposed to once a week like every other month).
-Carries Unnecessary Items with Her: Quỳnh is guilty of carrying things she does not need with her wherever she goes. If it is a road trip, she will carry food, and she carries medicine, band aids, and a ton of eagle oil.
-Pet Names: She will always give people pet names whenever she meets them. She usually says it to herself so she can remember them better, but sometimes it slips out and she calls them their pet name by mistake.
Fears:
-Personal Image: She is afraid of people talking behind her back and talk badly about her. She cares deeply about the way people see her, and she will do everything to change herself so she could be put in a positive light in their eyes.
-Unrequited Love: She is afraid that she would love someone that doesn’t love her back, so she doesn’t get close to anyone.
-Betrayal: Having been betrayed, she has a constant fear of people are going to leave her and sell her out.
-Bad Karma: She does believe in karma, and she is in constant fear of having bad karma. There is a problem here, however, since she is completely blind to the fact that she has done some bad things in the past, and she does deserve the bad karma.

“Quỳnh, con phải đi đến Mỹ.” An old man stated happily to a petite female as she stepped in. Looking astonished at him, she blinked slowly, taking off her straw hat so her chestnut ponytail could flow down her back. She was still stunned as she tried to process what she had just heard. ‘You have to go to America.’ It was just her imagination, right? All in her imagination, she was going crazy. That was it, wasn’t it? What else could get her boss to say such a thing? It wasn’t like that meeting that he had a while back was a link… Right?
“Bác nói cái gì?” She asked dumbly, looking at him with her chocolate brown eyes. ‘What did you say?’ What did he mean? It was all a joke; just a big joke that they’ll all laugh about later over dinner, right? It didn’t mean anything. He didn’t really mean it; but if he didn’t mean it, then why did he have that look on his face? Did he really mean it? He couldn’t have. Not without giving her at least a five days’ notice at the very least.
“Bác đã mua vé máy bay cho con roi. Con sẽ bay lúc 18h00.” He stated softly. When she opened her mouth to protest, the look in his eyes made her shrunk back. So he already booked her ride, and it’d be in… Three hours. Six in the evening. That was great. She only had an hour to pack her clothes, an hour to get to the airport, and an hour to go through customs. That was great. That was exactly what she needed now, stress and anger. That was just great. Carefully slipping some comfortable clothes into a small carry-on, she frowned slightly. He didn’t even give her enough time to double check for what were her necessities for the trip, nor did he give her time to change from her green áo dài into something more modern—not to mention cleaner, since she had been driving down dirt roads on various errands.
Why didn’t the old man go, but he made her go? Was it mandatory or something? She didn’t bother asking him any more questioned. It might be better to just go on the plane quietly and head on the, what, twenty-something hour flight to America—that was if she included time changes.
As soon as she was done, she had to literally run to the moped to make it to the airport on schedule. If she thought the traffic was bad, standing and arguing with customs was even worse. They wouldn’t let her pass without playing twenty questions beforehand. What was she going to do on a plane? Was she going to bomb it? Why the heck would she do that?! It was insane to think that she would bomb herself. She didn’t want a death wish. But no; that wasn’t the worst thing. The worst thing was that he boss didn’t even give her the plane ticket! She was fine with having to head off to America on short notice, but now she had to run out to track him down?! She should just go home now. That was it; she should just give up right then and there. Sighing softly, she ran out. It was a good thing that her boss’s car was still outside, meaning that she was able to grab her ticket.
As she was explaining to him that he still had the ticket, she wanted to bash her head to the concrete floor. The man was as hard-headed as a buffalo, maybe even worse than a buffalo. She didn’t know. She finally managed to convince him to check all of his pockets. That took way too long for her tastes. She was even later than she had expected, considering how there was the last call for her airline. That was great. Just fantastic. Making a quick dash to her gate, she managed to reach it in time before the plane pulled away from the terminal. Maybe her luck was starting to change.
Or maybe she spoke too soon. In her haste to get to the airport on time, she had forgotten to check where her seat was. She knew that she had to sit in economy, but she didn’t expect to be in the very back! That would mean that she would have to sit through all the turbulences! Great. She would love to be sick now. That is just her dream, to be sick on a plane for a five-hour flight. Thank goodness she would have a transfer over at Hong Kong. Maybe she’ll meet up with him; or not, since he might’ve taken another flight.
At least she could cool down at Hong Kong International Airport. She didn’t have to rush as badly, but she would still need to be quick. Heading straight towards the gate, she sighed. She wanted to know why the heck she was going to America’s place. It wasn’t like she was needed to be at his place for no reason. There was always a reason, but what was it? She could only imagine. If it had anything to do with fighting him again, she would book the next plane out of the States. She didn’t care if it disappointed her boss. She would turn back home.
Getting on the transfer plane, she sighed, relaxing into her seat. It was still in economy, but at least it was near the wings, meaning that the turbulence wasn’t as bad as before. Thank God. She could handle turbulence on a five-hour flight, but if it were for a something-teen hour flight, she’d rather die.
“Thank you for flying with us. We enjoyed serving you. Please do not release your seatbelt until the plane has come to a complete stop.” Thank God the ride was over. She couldn’t possibly stand another hour or so on the plane. Don’t get her wrong, the attendants were nice and all, but she couldn’t sit in one area for long. She needed to get up to get some blood pumping through her.
As soon as she got off, she had thought her worries were over. Boy, was she ever wrong. When she thought the customs back in Vietnam were bad, she was wrong. The customs here were longer. Bash her head against the wall. That was all she wanted to do. She wanted to bash her head against the wall, floor, whatever she could get her hands on. When she thought the twenty questions game back in Vietnam was bad, she was completely off; here was worse.
“Name?” The man behind the counter questioned in a deep, intimidating tone. Out of all the people working, she had to get the largest and scariest one. Great.
“Quỳnh Ánh Nguyễn.” She stated simply, looking at him as if she weren’t scared.
“Why are you here?” He questioned, looking through her papers. What was she going to do, kill everyone in America if they didn’t look at her papers?
“Business.” She replied, her voice was laced with a thick, Vietnamese accent. After a couple more questions, she managed to make it out without any scratches or wounds to anyone, thankfully.
She was so happy when she managed to throw her carryon into the back seat of a taxi and climbed in after it. She was so close to her destination that she couldn’t wait to relax.
“Where to?” The man in the driver’s seat asked. Blinking slowly, Vietnam tried to remember.
“Oh. Here.” She managed to pull a small slip of paper that her boss had managed to slip to her while he gave her the ticket. As he looked at the piece of paper, he nodded.
“Alright. We’ll get you there in a jiffy.” He stated as they drove off. She didn’t want to point out the stereotypes that most Western films portrayed were true, so she kept a tight lip, not talking to the man. He hadn’t made any attempts to talk to her either, considering how there was supposedly a language barrier between them.
As soon as they managed to get to the large hotel, she looked over at him, as if to confirm their destination.
“There you go.” The man stated. Quỳnh nodded, going into her suitcase to get her wallet out. Giving the cabbie the fare, she stepped out, looking up at the hotel. So this is where she was going to stay. Great.
Stepping inside, she found it to be rather nice. Going over to the front desk, she managed to check in without hassle—for once that day. Not wanting to take the elevator, she picked her luggage up and headed up the stairs, up the numerous flights. Finally managing to find room 201—after going up and down four or five wrong floors—she slid the card and opened the door, stepping into the room.
Going to the first bed she saw, she threw her suitcase to the side and relaxed, breathing softly as she closed her eyes. Finally, some time to rest. Closing her eyes slightly, she exhaled softly. She was finally there, and nothing else could possibly go wrong.
